3. The Evil Within

Shinji Mikami is without a doubt the father of the entire survival horror genre, as evident from creating franchises that still exist today such as Resident Evil. A few years back he had played a hand in developing Suda 51's Shadows of the Damned, but never really had a major say in creative control. If anything, it felt like the extent of his input was taking the core mechanics and controls of Resident Evil 4 and pasting them into the game, and calling everything a day. The Evil Within will mark his true return to the genre, but also something much bigger. Many survival horror offerings today are essentially nothing more than jump scare third person shooters. Dead Space - while a great series of games - is a perfect example and truthfully not scary in the slightest; but just nonstop shooting of Necromorphs with unique weapons. Again, they aren't bad games, but certainly don't represent true survival horror in the slightest. With Mikami's latest project, running for your life and hiding from all the demented creatures seem to be your primary methods of survival, with bullets being a scarce and a last resort. The story also appears to be a psychological nightmare, and something much more along the lines of Silent Hill than Resident Evil, which will be interesting from Mikami's perspective. In a perfect world, The Evil Within is a sales hit and revitalizes interest in classic survival horror.
