12 Most Bizarre Boss Battles In Video Game History
4. Joe Head Joe - Skullmonkeys
The sort-of sequel to the Neverhood (one of the most underrated games of the 90s, by my reckoning) took the adventures of Klaymen to a completely different gameplay dimension, moving away from his point-and-click roots to become a highly enjoyable and utterly bizarre 2D platformer. Embodying the offbeat spirit of the game is Joe Head Joe, one of the Skullmonkey leaders, with a skull for a head and, inexplicably, the head of one of the game designers as its torso. It's not the toughest of bosses, but the whole encounter is utterly surreal, as the digitised head burps at you, breathes fireballs, and pops its eyeballs out to attack you. The brilliant music adds to the oddness perfectly. So just who does Joe Head Joe's head torso (try saying that really fast) belong to? The answer is Joe Sanabria, one of the designers who worked on Skullmonkeys, and would go on to be Senior artist on Fallout: New Vegas. Good for him! Though no matter how far Joe Head goes in his video game career, nothing he achieves can possibly match the feat of being the torso of one of the strangest bosses in video game history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y0p6jCJLLk
