12 Most Bizarre Boss Battles In Video Game History

3. Head Of John Romero - Doom II

Continuing the mini-theme in this list of weird cameo appearances from game designers, the 'real' boss of Doom II is gaming's worst-kept secret. In the final level of the game, The Icon of Sin, you must go up a lift and pump ammo into the exposedf brain of a demon on the wall (you know, the one that looks like a flat mural of a demon rather than an actual demon). However, the true nature of this demon only gets revealed if you use the 'idclip' cheat, which lets you walk through all the walls in the game. Put on the cheat, walk through the demon's face mural, and you'll see that inside is the expressionless decapitated head of John Romero on a stick. When firing into the centre of the demon's head from the outside, the bullets actually go all the way through to hit Romero right in his digitised face! Once you're inside though, you can just blast him from close range and watch him grimace. When you first enter the level and come face-to-face with the demon mural, you actually get a clue as to its true nature (if you understand backwards speech), because the head says you to 'To win the game you must kill me, John Romero in reverse. An awesome piece of transcendence between easter egg and utterly strange boss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKOuOteJn2Q
