12 Most Disturbing Gaming Boss Battles Of All Time
1. Falling Woman - Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
The Fatal Frame franchise (Project Zero as it’s known in Europe) often doesn’t get its due. Survival horror titans like Resident Evil and Silent Hill tend to overshadow the comparatively obscure series from Koei Tecmo, which is a terrible injustice. If supernatural horror is your thing, Fatal Frame just cannot be beaten.
In the second main series entry, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, the player takes the role of two twin girls, Mayu and Mio Amakura. They’re investigating paranormal activity in an eerie, abandoned village (always a great idea). Needless to say, they have all manner of terrible experiences in the process.
To battle the ghosts the player encounters, they’re armed only with a camera: the Camera Obscura, which is able to defeat the spooks by exorcising them. Perhaps the most terrifying enemy of all is the Falling Woman, who we meet in Kiryu House’s Clock Hall. The battle isn’t especially difficult (the poor woman isn’t very mobile, owing to the grisly nature of her death), but the way she tries to ‘fall’ on the player after disappearing can make her tricky to keep track of and score 'hits' on.
The way she shuffles towards the player on her broken limbs is awful to behold too. With her eerie presence and sad backstory, the Falling Woman is a classic disturbing Fatal Frame enemy.
