12 Most Disturbing Gaming Boss Battles Of All Time

7. Pyramid Head - Silent Hill 2

On the subject of scares that are deeper and more psychological than simple monsters jumping out at you, make way for dear old Pyramid Head.

Silent Hill has never been a franchise to rely on cheap jump scares. It won’t make you jump like an excitable streamer playing Five Nights at Freddy’s. What it will do, however, is make you think, make you truly afraid on a deeper level. The personification of this concept within the series? Pyramid Head himself.

This iconic villain appears throughout the series, most prominently in Silent Hill 2. Here, they (there are more than one of them) serve as a kind of manifestation of protagonist James Sunderland’s grief following the death of his wife.

They appear in visions throughout, sometimes as brief boss encounters (similarly to Resident Evil 3’s Nemesis). Their design is inspired by Silent Hill's past as a town served by executioners, and it's freaky as hell, no matter how oversaturated it may have become.
