9. Super Mario Odyssey

Now, there is no doubting that Super Mario Odyssey is a great game, perhaps even an excellent one, but if you go by its Metacritic score of 97, it's one of the best video games of all time. It's great fun and all, but...really?

Where to begin? The camera has its issues, the motion controls are more irritating than fun, certain gameplay elements feel repetitive (especially the boss fights), the Broodals are irritating, co-op could be better, it's arguably overly reliant on nostalgia, and just where the hell is Luigi?

Odyssey is a flawed but highly enjoyable game, yes, but from the near-universal acclaim it's received, you'd think it was doing something truly remarkable and unique with the Mario formula, which it ultimately isn't.
