12 Problems Nobody Wants To Admit About GTA

11. Weapon Variety And Combat Needs An Overhaul

One thing that the series has always been celebrated for is varied gameplay. It’s no racing game, but there’s a whole lot of driving involved. It’s not a shooter, but players certainly spend a lot of time brandishing weapons.

The series pioneered this mixture of action gameplay - a style that doesn’t come without its drawbacks. For one thing, it doesn’t specialize in any one area, meaning that the gunplay just doesn’t match up to a dedicated shooter.

The weapon selection, from pistols to machine guns, from grenades to sniper rifles, feels rather uninspired. This isn’t to say that the series hasn’t introduced many spins on this classic arsenal (it certainly has), but the chance to customize weapons with added effects or otherwise make them more interesting would be fantastic.

In terms of melee weapons and combat in particular, the mechanics are pretty simplistic. Whether you’re flailing fists at opponents or waving a golf club at them, it’s not the most sophisticated or enjoyable system.

A potential Grand Theft Auto VI that embraced these ideas could take us to a whole new plane of gleefully violent mayhem, without compromising anything that makes Grand Theft Auto combat what it is.
