12 Ridiculous Video Game Ideas That Should Never Have Worked

1. Nintendo Wii

But the idea that I just couldn't believe actually worked the most was Nintendo's Wii. Pre-release snickering suggested that the console would probably enjoy modest success at best, given the mockery of its title and the riskiness of the motion control gimmick, but it ended up decisively beating the PS3 and Xbox 360 in the seventh generation, selling more than 100 million consoles and helping bring gaming closer to the mainstream. On paper, to me it seemed like an idea destined for failure, to sit alongside the Sega CD and other misguided peripherals as an outlandish gimmick that wouldn't connect with audiences. But oh how wrong I was. The Wii defied the odds and managed to succeed with non-gamers, casual gamers and Nintendo's hardcores all at once, and though their successor, the Wii U, is in dire straits at the moment, its seeming failure will never be able to undo Nintendo's mind-blowing success prior. Are there any ridiculous gaming trends, consoles or games I missed? Let me know below!
