12 Stunning Video Game Locations You Must Visit Before You Die

10. Armadillo - Red Dead Redemption

It may not be glamorous, spectacular or beautiful in any traditional sense, but the central town of Red Dead Redemption is all those superlatives in the way through how well it's realised one of the great settings of American cinema. Armadillo is the first time that gamers could see the world through the eyes of the legendary western characters of Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Charles Bronson. The western has long been one of the most significant, distinctive genres of American cinema, and finally a game arrived that could transport us there. It's only when you set foot on the dusty ground of Armadillo that you realise how well Rockstar has captured that bleak, unique western atmosphere. The quintessential western town, Armadillo has swinging saloon doors, crooked, rudimentary buildings lining the wide dirt road in the middle of town, and grizzled locals with leathery sun-dried skin. It's the kind of place where you feel like looking at the wrong person the wrong way will result in a fist-fight or gun duel in the centre of town - both of which can happen. When you're not getting eyeballed by the locals, it's a pleasure to just wander round the town and soak in the arid atmosphere, accompanied by the excellent, somber sound of a harmonica on the game's soundtrack.
