Before Just Cause, there was Boiling Point. But you've probably never heard of it because untold numbers of bugs and technical issues prevented it from being a great - or even particularly good - game.

Say what you will about its quality, Boiling Point was hugely ambitious, throwing players into the humid climes of a fictional South American country, and essentially letting them roam free. The 625 km sq. map was replete with dense jungles, villages, and firefights between communist insurgents and the government. You could pick up quests in bars, get high on drugs, and cause all manner of chaos. There were even interesting RPG elements, like improving gun skills, or having them deteriorate by not practicing.

The openness of the game and possibility of attack by wild animals gave Boiling Point a Far Cry 3 touch way before its time, but it was a technical calamity that, at the worst of times, made it unplayable.
