12 Times Pokemon Legitimately DIED
8. Sharpedo (Pokémon Moon)
Humans have a peculiar relationship with sharks. Generations of marine-biologists have spent decades trying to convince us that the big, bitey fish are in fact misunderstood softies of the water. However, they are trying to undo years of damage by Hollywood, whom have rechristened sharks as anti-boat, and anti-Samuel L. Jackson. An uphill battle to say the least.
Game Freak seem to be unconvinced as well in their portrayal of Sharpedo, establishing the shark-like Pokémon as a feared creature of the depths, dubbing the former Carvanha as "The Bully of the Sea" and going as far as to prohibiting the player from fishing off of Sharpedo in ORAS, with the game stating that it is "too risky".
There are some sadder parallels with their real-life inspiration though, namely through the reference of shark finning, a practise in which sharks are caught, de-finned, and thrown back into the water to die and very slow death. Sharpedo's Pokédex entry in Moon reveals that "in the past, its dorsal fin was a treasured foodstuff, so this Pokémon became a victim of overfishing."
Since the Pokémon Universe is steeped in tradition, it is highly likely Sharpedo-finning still exists at the hands of some very brave fishermen.
