12 Times Pokemon Legitimately DIED

The franchise' fifth movie is a wild ride.

Arriving at the anime-exclusive island of Alto Mare, Ash and his cohorts visit the city and take part in the local water chariot race. Following the race and meetings with some locals, Ash is eventually taken to the hiding places of Latios and Latias, the guardians of Alto Mare and are then introduced to the Soul Dew - a special jewel containing the spirit of the father Latios, who sacrificed himself to waive off a trainer terrorising the city many years ago.

Unbeknownst to Ash and his new friends, they are being spied on by Annie and Oakley, two Team Rocket members who wish to use the power of the Soul Dew to capture Latios and Latias. They succeed in capturing the jewel, reanimating several dead Pokémon to capture the legendary birds, but the resulting fracas causes the city's defence system to shut down and the jewel to disappear, resulting in a tsunami.

Latios eventually sacrifices himself to calm the waters and restore the defence system, becoming the new Soul Dew in the process. Elsewhere, it is implied Latias kisses Ash (via shape-shifting) in one of the few instances of human/Pokémon romance in the franchise.
