12 Unbelievable Indie Games That Deserved Your Attention In 2013

8. Prison Architect (PC)

When you consider the fact that Prison Architect is still very much an unfinished game, the fact that it ranks number eight on this list shows how it's already well ahead of the curve. With regular updates coming to those who have purchased the game on Steam, Prison Architect harks back to the heyday of games like Theme Hospital and brings them back in to the modern day spotlight. Though the game was officially launched in 2012, it's definitely been seen a lot more notably in 2013, with more features being released on a regular basis which has led to increasing numbers of people picking it up in its early stages. In terms of the simulation genre, it clearly stands above the rest of its kind by some margin; titles like Farming Simulator, which have made it on to consoles, seem to be attracting a more "ironic" fanbase. There remains a line between Prison Architect and it achieving the legacy of Theme Hospital though, particularly in the overwhelming sense of humour and innate "Bullfrog" eccentricity that made the game stand out so much. Whether or not future updates will make Prison Architect have that little something extra waits to be seen - but whilst it's still at its discounted pre-sale price, it's definitely worth seeing in the new year with this game in your collection.
