12 Unbelievable Indie Games That Deserved Your Attention In 2013
6. Surgeon Simulator 2013 (PC)
Any game called "Surgeon Simulator" comes with the idea that you might be in for a rather dull experience, full of too much arbitrary simulation aspects and not enough actual "action". Surgeon Simulator 2013 took that idea and threw it out of the window like a lung that's just getting in the way. Surgeon Sim balances a fine line between a game that is legitimately challenging, using the QWOP-style "control each finger" method with a sense of humour and light-heartedness. Originally made in 48 hours and featuring just one "basic" heart transplant mode, the game's immediate popularity led to a full release on Steam and newer modes consistently being released throughout the year. Newer modes have seen you being able to perform surgery in an ambulance or even in space, ramping up the ridiculousness factor of the game, but at the same time making it more difficult for those who actually want to buy in to the challenge. Every update has felt like it has added a necessary part to the overall package. Of course, it's not an accurate simulator, but you really wouldn't want it to be. After all, who wants to try a kidney transplant with anything other than a hacksaw?
