Mere months after Ubisoft's apocalyptic action RPG hit stores and did gangbusters business, the publisher confirmed that a movie was in the works, with Oscar nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain set to star, with Gyllenhaal also serving as producer.

Considering how many tremendous actors have fallen foul of the video game movie curse - Gyllenhaal himself with Prince of Persia - the real promise for this adaptation lies with Oscar-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan (Traffic), who will both write and direct.

The game's grim aesthetic yet forgettable story gives Gaghan plenty of room to craft his own spiritual spin on the game, and even if it merely ends up being a generically acceptable sci-fi actioner, it'll still be leagues ahead of Tomb Raider and, well, everything else.
