Days Gone is perhaps the most fascinating question mark in Sony's upcoming slew of PS4 exclusives, because it really could go either way.

Following its spectacular E3 2016 debut, hype surged surrounding the game's ability to feature literally dozens of zombie-like Freakers on the screen at once, but in recent times that buzz has cooled somewhat.

Hands-on impressions from the press have generally been pretty mixed, with some citing the underwhelming ordinariness of the open-world, while others have praised the unforgiving level of difficulty on offer.

Clearly the game is in a late stage of development with its release being merely 8 months away, so not a whole lot can be done to fix the potential issues, but at the same time, this could very well be a game that ends up surprising amid middle-of-the-road expectations.

While it's unlikely the game will score as highly as most of Sony's other highly-anticipated exclusives, if the horde mechanics are employed in diverse enough fashion and the intriguing story hooks pay off, this could be an unexpected treat for early next year.
