12 Video Game Genres That Desperately Need A Comeback

12. Vehicular Combat

The Genre: The name of the game is destruction by any means necessary, but always with the aid of your vehicle of choice. Titles such as Twisted Metal, Vigilante 8, Destruction Derby, Road Rash and Carmageddon emphasised wrecking your opponents as brutally and hilariously as possible, with the result being tremendous joy every time. What Happened: Despite a gallant effort by 2012's Twisted Metal reboot, the genre began stagnating by the turn of the millennium and has never really recovered. In fairness, it has always been a niche genre of sorts, but the mid-90s in particular was absolutely flooded with titles catering to it. One possible explanation is simply that, as first-person shooters have become more sophisticated and popular, the idea of using a car as a weapon has just seemed a little too silly to some, even though that's typically the whole point. Why It Needs A Comeback: Because as gaming as a medium starts to be taken more seriously by the world as a whole, something needs to keep everyone close to the ground, to remind all that sometimes a dumb, silly action game just hits the spot. It doesn't need smart storytelling or innovative mechanics: just fit a Mustang V8 Fastback with dual Gatling guns and you've got a pretty kick-a** game. Plus, with today's online infrastructure, multiplayer mayhem can be more insane than ever before.
