12 Video Game Genres That Desperately Need A Comeback

6. Extreme Sports

The Genre: Because sometimes you want something other than basketball or football in your game console, and with the likes of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, SSX, Skate, Amped and Cool Boarders, there was plenty to choose from from the mid-90s up until about 2010. What Happened: The Tony Hawk's franchise ran itself into the ground with two unsuccessful peripheral-based games, Ride and Shred, in quick succession. Perhaps this scared developers off from making anymore skating games, because the successful Skate franchise ended the very same year, and combined with the extreme sports surge leveling out, pretty much killed the whole genre. Why It Needs A Comeback: Because there's still an audience for these unconventional sports games. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, a compendium of classic levels from the first two games, was released in 2012, and Hawk himself recently confirmed that another game was in the works, hopefully revitalising the franchise and convincing the makers of SSX, Skate and so on to get back to the...grind (sorry).
