12 Video Games PlayStation Sent Out To Die
10. Horizon Forbidden West - PS4/PS5
When a game hits shelves is just as important as the quality of the game itself. Masterpieces like Grim Fandango, Chrono Cross, and Vagrant Story all tanked since their release date coincided with AAA titles with vastly superior marketing.
So, when Elden Ring was hailed as the bees knees before it came out, its competitors gave Hideaka Miyazaki's project a wide birth. Even if Elden Ring didn't live up to expectations (which it did), it was clear the Soulsborne title would sell like hot cakes.
Nevertheless, Guerrilla Games released the highly anticipated Horizon Forbidden West one week before Elden Ring. Unsurprisingly, the Horizon sequel's sales were way lower than projected, despite receiving rave reviews.
Worst still, Forbidden West suffered a staggering decline in sales the instant Elden Ring dropped. In the UK, the sales plummeted by up to 80% one week after the game's launch. Just to add gasoline to the fire, a Guerrilla Games developer went on a Twitter rant days later, berating the "sh*t quests in Elden Ring". (That probably didn't help the company's image.)
If Guerrilla Games released Forbidden West during the summer, it would've had far less competition. Sadly, the company refused to wait out the storm, causing their Horizon sequel to underperform.
