12 Video Games That Will Change How You See The World
1. To The Moon
Quite possibly the video game equivalent of the opening 10 minutes of Pixar’s “Up”, To The Moon is one of the biggest little surprises to be developed this decade. If you like rich storytelling, a beautiful soundtrack, and having your heart ripped and stomped on - before haphazardly being replaced in your broken chest - this is the indie game for you.
Two scientists arrive to the bedside of a dying man, Johnny, to use their Inception-like contraption to alter his memories, in the hope of helping him realise his cryptic life's ambition of flying to the moon.
Yet, as they travel further back through Johnny's memories, they discover a montage of young romance, disappointment and tragedy that shaped the distant relationship he shared with a wife he never truly connected with. It is through the memory machine and the attachment the scientists form with Johnny’s memories, that they are able to reconcile this love, and help him ‘remember’ when he and his sweetheart flew hand-in-hand to the moon.
Once the tears have dried and you’ve played the soundtrack on YouTube a few dozen times, the game tempts you to question what reality really is. Is true experience only what happens in our physical reality, or are our minds also a bastion of legitimate truth?
Are fake experiences any less important than real ones if we believe they are true? And in true Blade Runner-fashion, what’s the deal with all the rabbits?
