12. John Romero's Low-Key Return

Bad boy game developer John Romero has had a colourful career, to say the least. After early peaks of working with id Software on Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, he went from hero to zero with the disastrous Daikatana; a game so bad, it sank his studio, Ion Storm, in 2005.

Since then, the once-championed visionary has milled around in obscurity until this week, where he quietly returned to the spotlight on the Inside Xbox conference. He was coupled with his wife, Brenda Romero, to showcase their new title Empire of Sin (a fun looking mesh of The Godfather and X-Com).

The former big-shot sat in the background looking humble as his wife did most of the talking. It's a far cry from when the man infamously proclaimed he would make gamers his bitch...
