4. Gone Home
Another genre-bending expectation-twister that works on an entirely new level should you be educated in the tropes of first-person horror games, its particularly hard to delve into Gone Home without giving away plot-spoilers. Thus if youve managed to steer clear of the online-discussions around the themes contained within, by all means you owe it to yourself as a consumer of entertainment or media in general to experience Gone Home for yourself, before coming back and joining in the debate with the rest of us. For everyone else, don your spoiler-hats and proceed. So hands up, who telegraphed that ending? I certainly didnt. After having an entire game set up to be a horror, albeit through exquisite sound design and atmosphere, the final revelation that your entire family are actually perfectly fine, and the only remote horror to speak of was that your sister had actually ran away with her lover, is nothing short of genius. It may have resonated with you on many different levels depending on your expectances of the genre, and how much you let the creaks, groans and other sound effects get to you, but that final moment where you finally gain access to the attic is one of the most nerve-wracking stair-climbs Ive ever took part in.
