4. Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth

Lovecraft's oeuvre has really gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to video game adaptations as - outside of Frogwares' (developers of the woefully underrated Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments) upcoming Cthulhu project - there really isn't anything on the horizon for hardcore devotees. A damn shame considering the man's impact on horror fiction - there's traces of Lovecraftian DNA in everything from Conan The Barbarian and Hellboy, to Alone In The Dark, and Eternal Darkness. There's a treasure trove of material to work with, but if you're looking to explore the 'eldritch horrors' of Lovecraft, there's no better place to start than Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth. Now, chances are you've heard about Dark Corners in the context of the terrifying hotel set-piece which occurs a quarter or so into the game, and while that scene is easily one of the scariest moments you'll ever play, it's effective in large part due to the creeping pace of the preceding hours. Dark Corners starts off very slowly, but it's handled so masterfully that you'll spend every second of your trek through Innsmouth looking over your shoulder to make sure you aren't being shadowed. And you know what? Sometimes not knowing is better...
