Detention is a 2D point-and-click horror game from Taiwanese developer Red Candle, taking place in the 1960s during the country's infamous White Terror, a near-40-year period of martial law.

Though the game revolves around a supernatural force that invades a high school, this is really just a not-so-subtle (but no less effective) metaphor for the ghosts that continue to haunt the country, and to that end this is a rare title that engages with real-world history in a manner that's haunting, informative and not remotely immature or flippant (compared to, say, the Call of Duty series).

Gameplay-wise it's fairly simplistic exploration and survival fare, but the incredible mood ensures that Detention serves as both a vital history lesson and a terrifying game all in its own right. Play it late at night with your best pair of headphones.
