14 Controversial Video Game Moments That Pissed Off The Fanboys
14. How Daikatana Tarnished John Romero's Career!
Ever heard that one about a world renowned artist who inadvertently created a piece of art that was so horrendous it almost ruined his whole career? Many can say that such an incident has already occurred in their line of work. But if the artist was a game designer and the art was a video game, then John Romero and his abomination called "Daikatana" would completely fit that bill. For those who are unfamiliar with either names, here's a quick history lesson: John Romero is an American game programmer who co-founded id Software and led the development of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein -- some of the most ground breaking franchises that paved the way for the corridor shooter genre. Unfortunately, that legacy would come under fire in 2000 when Romero created what is considered the worst game of his entire career; Daikatana. Like his previous games, Daikatana was another corridor shooter with the exceptions of being developed under Ion Studios -- also co-founded by Carmack --and was anything but ground breaking. Simply put, the game was as uninspired as it was mediocre, and no marketing technique in the world could save it from going on to becoming a commercial flop. Although John Romero still has his career today, his fan base have long since been divided over the mess that was Daikatana.
