Take note prospective games journos, Resident Evil 5 is a prime example of what happens when a handful of off-the-cuff comments can snowball into an overblown mess of misconception and assumption.

Criticised for displaying racist themes by way of showing a white protagonist (Chris Redfield) being accosted by and killing large groups of black people, Capcom faced a backlash of gargantuan proportions simply for populating its fictional African village with the same race of people that live in the real version.

Following that debacle, Capcom revealed Chris' partner - Sheva Alomar - a native African who stirred up even more aggro for the studio as detractors suggested she was created purely to offset previous criticisms.

Life lesson: don't try and be accurate when recreating a real world setting.
