14 Most Insane Video Game Dream Sequences
4. Arkham Asylum
Arkham Asylum was seen by both critics and players as the first time Batman had ever been fully realised in video game form. More than just throwing in the superhero's best villains and iconography and calling it a day (though the title admittedly boasted both of those in spades), developers at Rocksteady really made the world of the Caped Crusader come alive through the smaller details, which all came together to form a title dripping in Gothic atmosphere.
And nothing summed up this commitment to the dark Batman ethos more than the Scarecrow nightmare sequences. After being gassed by villain's fear toxin on multiple occasions, the game subtly transformed into something straight out of a horror game, as you walked Batman through eerie hallways or deserted rooms that were chock-full of symbolism and references to The Dark Knight's past.
But the most memorable sequence came from a beautifully done fourth-wall breaking twist. Suddenly your game looked as if it had crashed, restarting to the beginning of the game. However instead of playing out like it always did, showing Batman escorting The Joker through the Asylum, this redux of the original cinematic switches the roles of hero and villain to deliver an eerie fever dream subversion of Arkham Asylum's pitch-perfect opening.
