13. Evolve

MetaCritic Score: 74-77 What It Deserved: 60 Evolve was massively hyped as the Next Big Thing ahead of release, but Turtle Rock Studios' follow-up to their superb Left 4 Dead was in fact a colossal let-down, a tedious multiplayer excursion that used up most of its goodwill after no more than a few hours. The concept is admittedly superb: four human hunters take on a monster who continually evolves throughout the battle, but sadly there's not much beyond that premise to sustain a full-price retail title. The maps are far too similar, there's too much grinding, and your level of fun will vary wildly depending on the skill of the people you're playing with. If you can find four pals to consistently play it with, then you'll benefit substantially, but this just isn't very realistic for the vast majority of players. It looks nice and it has some solid ideas, but it's ultimately all about the execution, and Evolve falls down hard with an intermittently enjoyable experience at best.
