With the SNES Classic Mini due to launch imminently, Nintendo has decided to further exploit all the nostalgic hysteria by announcing a SNES-themed 3DS XL.

Many will be disappointed to learn that the limited edition handheld will only be available in Europe when it launches on 13 October, and while there has already been some criticism from fans about how the design has favoured aesthetics over actual function, it's nevertheless going to become a hot collector's item for the foreseeable future.

Unsurprisingly, most stockists have already run out of their pre-order allocation, so expect plenty of the usual hand-wringing about Nintendo's infuriatingly minimal manufacturing runs.
