14 Video Games That Prove Local Multiplayer Is The Best

10. Portal 2

Portal was an unexpected smash-hit when it released as part of The Orange Box in 2007, so it's no surprise that a sequel came out a few years later because Valve loves nothing more than to give fans what they want. Well, Left4Dead and Portal fans, anyway. Half-Life fans unfortunately get treated like unwanted step-children. Portal 2 was everything a fan of the original could have hoped for. It was bigger, better and funnier and better than its predecessor, with a much longer story that somehow never managed to lose its charm and puzzles that were as devilishly difficult as ever. Oh, and it had an awesome co-op mode. It's a unique experience trying to solve mind-bending puzzles with a friend. There will likely be arguments about what to do and who should do it, especially when one person fails to do something successfully for the tenth time in a row and stubbornly refuses to give up trying. Still, it'll all be worth it when the euphoria of victory overwhelms you both. Not even the good half hour of yelling over the top of each other can diminish the smug satisfaction of solving a puzzle. Of course, it's entirely possible to play Portal 2 online thanks to voice chat and Valve making it very easy to communicate where the other player should place their portals, but to us it's easier and more satisfying to play together in person.

When I'm not playing games, I'm probably either writing about them somewhere or singing stupid songs inspired by them. Or eating pizza.
