14. Rage 2

Rage 2 remains a crying shame, because back when this got revealed, there was so much to love. A hybrid personality of Mad Max aesthetics and arena shooting, Just Cause devs Avalanche helping with the driving sections and Andrew "Party Hard" W.K. endorsing its presentation and heralding it into the public eye.

All things were set for this to knock it out the park.

Then we got hands on, and realised Rage 2 was just about the most beige, tired, rote and boring version of a game being forced into an open-world template yet.

Missions were short and forgettable, you spent 80% of your time driving around empty wastelands, the best weapons were hidden around such an expansive load of nothing, and the story did VERY little to propel you from A to B.

A new shooter from iD Software should've made a tidal wave splash after 2016's DOOM, but by diluting the developers' best aspects and forever getting in its own way, this remains a painful missed opportunity.
