13. Betraying The Brotherhood

In the wake of the best mission in Assassin’s Creed Rogue (and possibly the series), you are left contemplating the true nature of the Brotherhood. You are on the same level as Shay. Just as he is debating his entire life, you are debating whether the side that you have been playing through a multitude of games is ultimately flawed.

It’s a moment that unites the player and protagonist as one, and it’s great.

Running from your brethren only to be hunted by those you trusted is incredibly moving. Not to mention the lengths that Shay is willing to go to do what’s right. His final words as he betrays the dogmatic Brotherhood who are too blind to see the truth. The whole scene is powerful simply because you are living it alongside Shay.

Rogue is one of the more creative and emotionally packed titles in the series and this moment stands out above the rest of them. Not only because it’s a powerful moment, but because the player is experiencing it as well. Their entire view of the Brotherhood - a view that has been built over a multitude of games - is subverted. Moments like that are few and far between.
