15 Best Months To Be A Gamer (Since 2000)

5. May 2010 €“ Wake, Galaxy And Redemption...

Just when you thought you knew everything Rockstar had to offer, they unveiled the sequel to their little known title Red Dead Revolver. Red Dead Redemption played like an old western version of Grand Theft Auto and it was freaking awesome. It tells a tale of one man's quest for redemption (surprisingly) and the setting, the soundtrack and the graphical style all work together to bring it to life. It's a game filled with surprises; the biggest and best one coming right at the end, creating a gaming moment that's genuinely unforgettable.

Microsoft has always experimented with different genres and franchises to bring unique titles to their consoles and Alan Wake is certainly unique. It tells the story of a writer whose fictional crime world comes to life, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. The game brands itself €œA Psychological Action Thriller€ and it certainly lives up to that billing with great atmosphere (including great use of shadows to create genuinely terrifying moments) and a unique way of utilising light to defeat enemies.

How do you follow up a game as good as Super Mario Galaxy? Simple. Release a game that's just as good and call it Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo often gets criticised for lack of originality but when they're able to produce exciting platforming adventures like this, who really cares? Galaxy 2 was bursting with colour and mind-bending platforming sections €“ there was a ton of innovation on offer here.

Metacritic Roundup: Red Dead Redemption, 95. Alan Wake, 83. Super Mario Galaxy 2, 97. Average: 91.67.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
