15 Best PS1 & PS2 Survival Horror Video Games
4. Forbidden Siren
Whilst mentioned in a previous article that Forbidden Siren had a poor stealth mechanic, it is by no means a bad horror game.
It would be remiss to ignore the faults that immediately present themselves when playing Forbidden Siren; the aforementioned stealth, the weirdly out of place facial mapping, the oddly-paced episodic structure.
But for its fault, there's actually a relatively solid horror game in there. Much like Obscure taking Western influence from films, the Siren series draws inspiration from film contemporaries like The Ring and The Grudge, to name a few.
Keeping combat to a bare minimum and as a means of incapacitating over killing, sneaking past the Shibito was the favoured method of progression. Utilising a feature called Sightjacking, it allowed you to see from the perspective of nearby enemies and work out patterns of patrol.
Commercially successful and spawning a few sequels, Forbidden Siren paved the way for such hide and seek-a-thons like Outlast and Alien: Isolation in years to come.
Whether we'll see it again is another thing, but if you're after some retro sneaking horror, it's worth checking out.
