5. The Thing

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
Black Label Games

Our final entry in the chill-ogy, The Thing is a unique game. Set as a sequel to John Carpenter's 1982 movie of the same name (which in itself is a sequel), The Thing follows a team of US Special Forces operatives following the events at the end of the movie.

Whilst not graphically revolutionary, nor the shooting/action being anything remarkably new to the formula, it did offer something brilliant instead: a Fear/Trust mechanic.

What it meant that any NPC's met along the way could either trust player character Blake, or suspect him of being a Thing. Differing levels of trust meant that people who be insubordinate or blindly loyal, to freaking out and having heart attacks, killing themselves or others, or sabotaging the environment.

It also utilised an infection probability system, that meant that any time an enemy is faced, characters are liable to become infected sooner and therefore transform and become an enemy themselves.

The Thing, The Game was a decent survival horror if you weren't satisfied with the cliffhanger events of the film, and hankered some new gameplay mechanics.
