9. Obscure

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
Sony

If the last game was visually a product of its time, then Obscure would be defined by the films of its time.

Coming at a time when teen slasher films were experiencing a renaissance, with sequels from Halloween, Friday the 13th and the Scream franchise surrounding it, as well as the first Saw movie a year before, Obscure wasn't lacking for inspiration.

Again, set against the backdrop of experimentation and human subjects, Obscure saw our group of teenagers locked in their school overnight and having to face hordes of mutated students. Playing as one of five students, each bringing their own differing abilities to gameplay, the game also allowed a second player to jump in as your partner.

Using a brightness mechanic later expanded on in Alan Wake, the gameplay of Obscure was again not to be an all-out hero, but to focus on survival whilst uncovering the mystery happening at your school.

Obscure did well enough to warrant a sequel, but that was quite literally more of the same, right down to the characters, and nothing has been made of the series since.
