High school can be a rough place. The fear of not fitting in, the struggle of achieving the work set out for you and what your teachers establish your life to be, or the constant threat of having to enter the Metaverse. Y'know, the supernatural random created of people's subconscious desires made real. What, you didn't have one of those at your school?
As silent protagonist Joker and his band of Phantom Thieves, events ultimately lead out of the school and into the world of political subterfuge, and then some, as the plot descends into what can only be described as "wacky anime madness" by its second half.
Not that that's a derision, as the Persona series has always thrived on the abstract. This is a definite example of something you'd file under "something different", yet still within the confines of the RPG genre. A long running series, it was this fifth installment of the main series that drew players in.
With its throwback style of turn based combat, paired with the transformable egos for the player characters, it's a story that really needs to be played to be believed.
