1. Grand Theft Auto V (2013, PS3 & X360) - 37.14 Million
You hadn't forgotten about GTA, had you? Rockstar's behemoth of a franchise landed at the close of 2013 and blew all previous sales records out the water. Breaking nothing less than six Guinness World Records including 'Best-selling game in 24 hours' and 'fastest game to gross $1 billion', Rockstar capitalised on it by following up with the PS4 and Xbox One versions one year later. The Xbox One version didn't chart using the methodology I had in mind here, but the PS4 release netted 10.27 million units to date, taking the total platform sales between PS3, 360 and PS4 to a whopping 47.41 millions of units, absolutely dwarfing its nearest competitor, Modern Warfare 3, which sits at 28.09. After all that, looking at what we tend to invest the most money in, it appears formulas do sell incredibly well (the only first instalment on the list was Kinect Adventures, and that owes its heritage to Wii Sports), but you have to ensure a high-level of quality behind each subsequent release, or the drop-offs in between can be severe, or dire in the long run. For now, rest easy, as providing you think GTA V is one of the greatest games of the decade so far, your fellow human tends to agree. Which sales figures blew you away, or are they all totally justified? Let us know in the comments which game should've sold more, or maybe doesn't deserve its hefty market share!
