Nine years after the original two, there was always going to be a high amount of expectation, and despite its different aesthetic compared to Remedy's work, Rockstar's Max Payne 3 is one of the finest third-person shooters ever crafted... that barely anyone bought.

Taking the bullet-time and Shootdodge mechanics from the first two and cranking them up to eleven, Max Payne 3 delivers an action-packed experience that rivals some of the best action movies out there. The Shootdodge is a constant highlight reel dispenser as you dive through windows, jump off boats and barge past gunfire to land that one bullet (that was individually modelled) through the skull of some paramilitary chump.

Run into a room, pop a guy with a pistol, then pick up his and now you're dual-wielding, shred the heavy than equip his assault rifle, dive through the window and headshot five other guys - all in the span of about four seconds. No other game provides the high-octane, fast-paced yet challenging (as it should be) shooting experience that Max Payne can.

Alongside all that, is an interesting redemption story that is often overshadowed by the gameplay.
