2. Mass Effect 2 - Bioware

Mass Effect 1 had problems, the most notable being the Mako sections, but also the gunplay didn't feel incredibly fleshed out either, feeling somewhat unfinished.

In steps Mass Effect 2, with it's much tighter, more realised third-person combat, standing shoulder to shoulder with a great story that starts with death and leads to a suicide mission.

Commander Shepherd, with Cerberus, must build a team of impressive individuals to combat The Collectors, turning a 'suicide' mission into just 'a' mission. It's one of the few games that can make the most heartless, emotionless player actually care about their shipmates.

Mass Effect 2 is a huge, fulfilling game with great customisation, dialogue and graphics that still looks good today. Even though Mass Effect 3 takes this even further, it has the widely known problem with the story that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, ultimately making Mass Effect 2 much easier to reminisce about and revel in.

ME2 provides the same experience, but with a much more enjoyable end that 3 should have thought to of replicated at the very least.
