4. Christopher Judge - Kratos (God Of War)

Joel And Sarah
Sony Santa Monica

You wouldn’t think there would be much to playing the God of War outside of angry shouting and bemused grunts, but the brilliant reboot of the much-revered franchise proved otherwise. There were still those angry bellows and those signature grunts, but the hulking Christopher Judge ensured that there were soft bits behind all that unconquerable muscle.

Switching up locales and with a son in toll, Kratos’ journey to scatter the ashes of his recently deceased wife meant that the Greek God was responsible for raising his son. Stick Kratos in a fight with a foe a thousand times his size, no bother. Leave him alone with an insecure child, there may be issues there.

Judge’s hesitation and deliberation, ensured that each player felt the pain the situation Kratos found himself in. A man knowing what he has to do, but finding himself unable to do so, and seeing his son slip through his fingers because of it. While often choosing silence, or at most a deep groan, Judge’s delivery and hefting posture meant that the years of legend, history, and trauma kept coming back to the character as much as his trusty Leviathan Axe.
