Speaking of things going complete banana sandwich insane, Final Fantasy VII Remake's final hour split the fandom right down the middle.

If you're in the positive camp, me too, so let's discuss it as a good thing.

See, all throughout the game there were these strange, all-new hooded figures called "Whispers". They interfere at various times in the story, and after Sephiroth shows up and cuts a rift into a few thousand of them, it's revealed they are the physical manifestation of destiny. Every time a character steps out of line or tries to do something different, a Whisper sets things "right".

In-game they're described in reference to characters' futures, but in a meta sense, these Whispers represent the way any Final Fantasy VII Remake is "supposed" to go.

At the exact point the original FF7's Midgar section ends though, here Sephiroth and Aerith essentially reveal they've known all along what was happening, and all bets are off.

The gang walk through this "deviation in the timeline" portal, and the close of the game sees them fight fate itself. Beating Sephiroth takes him and Cloud to the "edge of creation", and appears to fracture reality by freeing up a number of pivotal moments like preventing Zack Fair's death.

It is absolutely barmy but does work in unifying veteran fans and newcomers, as NONE of us know what's coming next.
