15 Best Video Game Platformers Ever
12. Super Meat Boy
Super Meat Boy is not for the faint hearted. It’s an insanely hard game, one which starts off a little tricky and suddenly shunts upwards into another stratosphere.
Playing as the titular Super Meat Boy, your job is to avoid saw blades, spikes and hammers as you make your way through a winding maze. To make up for the difficulty, each level is pretty short, and once you get the hang of it, the game is very rewarding.
It has a janky, slightly goofy look which is full of charm. It doesn’t look too dissimilar from those flash games we used to play in ICT when the teacher wasn’t looking, but that belies the quality and depth Super Meat Boy has.
Despite the sharp learning curve, it has a very simple control system, and fully embodies the pick up and play attitude of the best platformers. A real gem, if you have the stomach for it.
Speaking of games harder than Vinnie Jones, Cuphead has been excluded here. It does have platform sections, but it’s a boss rush first and foremost. A tenuous decision maybe, but a line has to be drawn somewhere.
