15 Best Video Game Platformers Ever

7. Celeste

There’s definitely games here which are better than Celeste (hence why it’s seventh), but there aren’t many which are more endearing. Despite its difficult patches, Celeste is effortlessly enjoyable and sweet, and uses its brief narrative sections to tell a compelling story.

Based around the simple idea of climbing a mountain, along the way you encounter crazy old ladies, haunted hotels, a fellow traveller and a demonic version of yourself.

The levels fold outwards on themselves, offering multiple pathways to progress. Be careful though, some offer dead ends, much harder ascents, or devilishly difficult bonus routes to claim hidden strawberries.

The reward for these strawberries? At the end of the game, your pie will be nicer. It doesn’t sound like much, but by the end of Celeste’s story you’ll be so invested in the characters you’ll want them to have the best pie possible.

The mechanics start out simple, but grow slowly more complex, lulling you in.

Recently, Celeste went up against Red Dead Redemption 2, God Of War and Spider-Man for Game Of The Year. Somewhat obviously, it didn’t win, but to be in such company as an indie game shows you the quality it has.
