Yes, Metal Gear is this high on the list, and yes it's because of the length of the game. Now that's out of the way, let's get down to brass tacks, as although you can defend the likes of the short (about four hours on average) length of the game under the guise of replayablity, if we're honest what we have is a demo packaged as a full retail product. Of course price shouldn't dictate quality whatsoever, but even Zone of the Enders' MGS2-bundle offered more in terms of length back in 2001, and that came with a full game to get stuck into. Regardless, what we have here is a premium slice of a thick, mouthwatering steak we just can't have all of yet, and as The Phantom Pain's release date continues to slip further away (although expect something huge at E3), diehard fans of the franchise (and this author) opted to grab a taste of the end product - out of pure, liquid fandom. Does it play well though? Well, in the words of Walter 'Heisenberg' White; "You're goddamn right!" Sure the gameplay may still be routed in 1998 - and aside from adding in the ability to headshot a guard if they spot you, nothing's really changed - but it's still Metal Gear, and in that comes a whole plethora of enjoyable tidbits; from tight shooting controls, that unmistakeable tension stemming from being deep behind enemy lines as you sneak around busting heads and saving hostages, and ultimately the 'feel' of an incredibly epic story with one of the best protagonists in gaming history (even if Keifer Sutherland's new voicework is a bit lifeless).
