No video game series has ever finished a trilogy-spanning main story without disappointing at least some of the franchise's most hardcore fans, and Gears of War 3, despite its efforts, predictably still came under the same level of player scrutiny you'd expect from such a definitive game. Though the outcry to the series' finale always felt at bit at odds with the entire franchise, as players never went to Epic Games' flagship title for its emotional beats, but the chainsaw-wielding, visceral third person shooting that defined the series in the first place. Featuring locations never before seen in a Gears game and - gasp - introducing a spot of colour into the series (after two games they must have ran out of brown and grey), this third entry into the franchise tried its best to do something different with the established mechanics inherent to Gears of War. Throw in some surprisingly poignant scenes and the closest to perfect the franchise's gameplay has ever been and this final entry into the franchise's main story will go down in history as one of Microsoft's most definitive titles.
