4. The Baron Bares His Soul

One of the most interesting characters in The Witcher 3 is Philip Strenger, AKA the Bloody Baron. Geralt comes to the Baron in search for information on Ciri, who in return requests Geralt’s help in locating his missing wife and daughter.

What starts out as seemingly just another side story ends up being one of the most tragic and heart wrenching stories in the entire game. Geralt deduces the terrible truth: that the Baron is an abusive and ill-tempered man whose drunken rage pushed his family away. He confronts the Baron about this, demanding the truth, leading to a scene where the Baron pours his soul out to Geralt, exposing the tortured and confused man hidden beneath his brutish and confident veneer.

This moment is a complete and total sucker punch because it is way more emotionally powerful than you expect even from a game as good as The Witcher 3. The story of this man and his family is twisted and sad, and its telling is incredibly well acted and animated. His eyes are especially emotive, making the Baron feel like a real three-dimensional person.

It’s shocking, not because it’s silly or controversial, but because it is so good you can’t believe a video game can make you feel this way.
