The Witcher 3 is just as much a self contained story as it is a sequel, making it a great entry point for new players. Chances are many of these new players have and will want to play the previous two games upon completing it, and while The Witcher 2 still holds up, you might be surprised at how dated the first game has become, specifically in regards to its visuals.

Of course much of it can’t be helped, as every video game grows more dated with each passing year, and let's be fair, the original Witcher is almost 10 years old at time of writing.

That being said, it hasn't exactly aged gracefully; in fact it is exceedingly ugly, at least when it comes to its character models. Geralt, Triss, Vesemir, and the gang all look horrendous, especially Zoltan, who looks like a bug-eyed stalker. The facial animations are still and lifeless, while the characters bare little resemblance to how they look in the following games, making it stand out all the more.

This obviously has no reflection on the actual game, which is still respectable, especially considering it’s developer CD Projekt RED’s first major title. That being said, there’s no denying the significant advancements made in the sequels, and of the three games, the original is the hardest one to get into precisely because the production values aren’t as high as you might expect if the other games were your introduction to the series.
