15 Fan Demands For The Fable Reboot
9. Story Based Defeat System
One of the first features that was spoken about for Fable, back in the Project Ego days, was a story based defeat system instead of a game over screen. Basically, whatever you did and however you failed would continue your personal story.
If you were journeying with a partner then you'd be taken down by beasts but they'd fight to get you back up again, leaving you with a lasting scar but ready to continue the mission. Should you get defeated alone in the woods, then a passing hunter or witch might find you and nurse you back to health, leaving you in debt to them and possibly opening up new missions. Should you be defeated by guards then you'd be arrested and spend time in jail, getting older and missing out on timed quests. Should you be beaten by bandits who are raiding a village, you'll not only be captured, but the village would be destroyed and anything the Hero could have done there in the future would have been lost for that playthrough.
So much better than heroically overcoming all enemies at the cost of a single scar, this system was a storytelling great that was never even given a chance.
