Nostalgia is a powerful tool in the right hands; in Hideo Kojima's hands, it's capable of bringing tears to grown men's eyes. Snake's return to Shadow Moses is pre-empted by a small runthrough of the first section of the original Metal Gear Solid; completing the section or dying sees Otacon waking Snake up, who remarks that he was "having that dream again". A brief return to Metal Gear Solid 1 would have been enough but the entire Shadow Moses segment is full of nostalgic joy. Exploring the snow-devastated exterior brings up small windows showing the area as it looked in the original game and there's a bunch of audio cues which bring the memories flooding back. Perhaps the most infamous moment during your Shadow Moses return is Otacon telling you to change the disc (pretty much in the exact spot you had to change it back in the original game) before remembering that the PlayStation 3 system uses Blu Ray discs. It's a bizarre Codec call but, let's face it, in a Metal Gear game, it feels somehow fitting. In a series that's full of special moments, Old Snake's journey into Shadow Moses stands out and it feels like a suitable event for a game which acts as a farewell to the legendary Solid Snake.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
